Stella Cidre, Sabotage, Chili's & Cronuts

Here's what I've done in the past week. In the last blog I mentioned the one thing I did for the day, which was go to Walmart and that was uneventful. Tuesday, in the evening I went with someone to Chili's; I know but it's in town and I am fine with their food. For whatever reasons it was real busy there. I can't explain it as I've never seen it that packed before. At least my boneless wings were good.

Wednesday, I went to Walt Disney World. Yep, I am bragging! I went to Epcot, in particular. They have their Flower & Garden Festival, so I had something to look at as I walked around. Speaking of packed, it was the same for WDW, so walking around and getting exercise was fine with me. They had several food & drink booths set up so I did take advantage of that, but none of the drinks I had were alcoholic, which may be surprising to some. I did try their croissant/donut combination, now popularly known as the cronut, although that term is now copyright by the restaurant in NYC which came up with it so that's why it wasn't called that and from looking at pictures, this one looked far different from the original version. Still, it was pretty tasty so I won't complain.

Thursday I did not do a darn thing so let me skip ahead to Friday, where I went to Lakeland. For the second time I saw a film in the Cinemark Theatres they have in town; it's real fancy and all the screens are pretty large and the sound system is nice too. The prices are pretty fair so if it was closer I'd go there more often. I saw Sabotage, as it's a new Arnold movie and I was hoping it'd be good; it wasn't!

What a dour and ugly movie, with a lot of meanness/unpleasantness and it's full of disgusting/awful characters you couldn't possibly root for, not even Arnold. It's also really graphically gory; with a movie that has a lighter tone it'd be one thing, but here it just makes things worse and I did not like it at all. At least after the film I drove to a favorite restaurant of mine, the fast food joint known as PDQ. Yep, their food is great and so are their shakes; I had the chocolate/peanut butter combination.

Saturday, I had to pick up a family member at the airport late at night; the airport in Sanford, I mean. I was able to stop at a Miller's Ale House to watch some college basketbal and kill some times before the airport. I only had alcohol, and it was Stella Cidre; it's pretty good! I got at the airport late, but the flight was late too so that was a lucky break for me.

Sunday I did not do anything, so let me mention that when I return next Monday, I know I'll be talking about Wrestlemania (it'll be free and on the WWE Network this upcoming Sunday and I am more interested if they'll have problems with many thousands of people watching the stream at the same time rather than the show itself) and the day before I'll be dropping someone off at the airport in St. Pete-Clearwater and I think I'll be spending the entire day in the Tampa Bay area, so that blog shouldn't be dull.

Tales of College Basketball Tournaments & Smelly Cosplayers

Here's a recap of a week that wasn't too exciting... aside from two very eventful days. My apologies for getting this up later than usual, but I had to do some things before finishing this off, including going to Walmart, which was thankfully an uneventful trip.

Monday I did not do anything. Tuesday, I went out to dinner, which meant going to Chipotle and after that going to Planet Smoothie to get one of their new limited edition flavors (they are going with a superhero theme and the one I had was Thorberry Greek). Wednesday I did not do anything either (but the friend of my mom's went back home to Illinois) so let me get to the crux of this post, which is what I did on Thursday and Friday.

Thursday night I went to the Amway Center in Orlando to catch a pair of college basketball games. It was part of the NCAA tournament, a big deal during this time of the year as many people who don't even watch a second of those games otherwise participate in office pools where they try to come up with the most accurate bracket. I had never been to one of them so I figured I should use part of my birthday cash to check it out. The first game was Saint Louis vs. North Carolina State and the second was Manhattan against Louisville, who won the entire tournament last year. I sat in the upper deck but the view was fine. The people around me were usually fine, but during the second game there was someone who loved hollerin' in a barely coherent manner. I never got a glimpse of him... for all I know that person was “mentally handicapped” with how they were acting. If not, then yikes.

The first game wasn't the prettiest to watch; North Carolian State built a big lead but due to crappy play they blew it and the game went into overtime, where Saint Louis won. There was a half hour break, where I got to eat some pizza. Then, it was Louisville only beating Manhattan by a few points. The people that put together the tournament knew what they were doing here; they had Louisville play against a team coached by a guy who used to play then coach alongside Louisville's coach, and that had to be a big reason why the game was close except for the final 90 seconds or so. I was at least glad I got to see two close exciting games in a row. If only the second game hadn't taken so damn long and I wasn't in the building for almost 6 hours straight.

Friday, I did another first; I went to a comic book convention. It was at the Orange County Convention Center on I-Drive and it's known as MEGACON. The past few years I was interested to go to one of these but due to various circumstances, I couldn't do it until now. I got there not too long after it opened and it was already jam-packed and OH MY GOD. The sights I saw there were even wackier than I could have imagined. There were some classic cosplaying, such as Doctor Who (there were plenty of Doctors around), Star Wars, Star Trek, or something old like Indiana Jones and Marty McFly. Many of the videogame ones I recognized. But, just about all of the anime characters (which was many of the people there), I have NO idea as to what character they were portraying as I don't watch any anime at all, and most of those were pretty wacky-looking to me. Of course, I do have to give props to everyone who dressed up, as they all put in a lot of time and effort into their costumes; some were pretty elaborate and/or required giant props.

I know that the title of this post references “smelly cosplayers”. Sad to say a few times I did smell some pretty bad body odor, which lives up (or down) to the stereotype. I hope that during the weekend where I understand MANY more people were there, that body odor didn't hang in the air but that's a distinct possibility. I actually shouldn't make fun of most cosplayers like that, as I am sure only a small segment of them have an issue with showering. After all, at least 6 random people complimented me on an XFL shirt I dug out and wore that's vintage from when I bought it in 2002 from a Spencer's Gifts when it was on clearance for only like 4 bucks. I can only imagine the sort of attention I would have gotten if I had dressed up in any sort of outfit; it's easy to see why those people would want to dress up and get showered with compliments for their duds.

As much of the items there weren't for me (I just don't care about anime or comic books, and I don't really care for hentai, which was actually on one table), I spent a lot of time just walking about and looking at everyone's outfit. I ate dinner there; they offered up chicken fingers and fries and as I ate it, it was not too great, and I later paid the price for eating that food!

There were people around I knew who I didn't see (I discovered this later), but I did see some people I know and it was nice to talk to them, even if it was only for about a minute or two. It was certainly a different environment for me, all those “unique” people milling about, and a rare case of me NOT being one of the oddest individuals around!

By the time I got home I was simply exhausted from all the walking around I did in that 24 hour period. That is why I did not do anything Saturday or Sunday. At least there was college basketball to half pay attention to, as that's at least more interesting to me than most of what's on TV. To be honest most of what you do see on TV is total mindless garbage but that's another rant for another day.

When I return next Monday to post my next blog, I really don't know yet what I'll be writing about. It won't be as eventful or different as this blog post, but it should turn out at least OK.

Godzilla, Shamrock Shakes & Banana Caramel Sweet & Stacked Hotcakes

This isn't the lengthiest blog I've ever done by any means, but that's how it turned out. This past Monday itself I did not do anything except get the Tuscan Six Cheese pizza from Papa John's, which was pretty good. Tuesday and Wednesday were more interesting. This is because both nights I went out to restaurants for dinner. As has been the case for the past few years now, a longtime friend of my mom has taken vacations to Florida from Illinois. Especially this year I don't blame her for wanting to leave a Midwest winter.

Tuesday, we decided to go to Longhorn Steakhouse, a restaurant they enjoy going to and I think it's fine too. I had my “almost always” of a burger and fries and it was a decent meal. Wednesday, they decided to go to Carrabba's for some Italian food. I haven't been there in years. That's just how it worked out. As I don't eat most Italian food, I stuck with pizza and that was fine by me. I should go there more often. I did not do anything on Thursday, so onto Friday... I went to another restaurant.

Friday, I went to Bob Evans with the “crew”. Oh, what a day this was. We decided to go there as it's real close by. Everyone enjoyed their meal. You can have breakfast food there at any time so that's what we did. I got their limited edition banana caramel sweet & stacked hotcakes. If you think it sounds delicious... it was! During the evening, I had to try and assist someone with a computer issue; unfortunately, because it was Microsoft it was more complicated than it had to be and what I wanted to do did not work. I could rant and rave about it as it did make me quite salty at the time, but ultimately I blame Microsoft for needlessly complicating something and thus likely causing problems for many people; if I had issues with it, I can only imagine what would happen with a computer novice, someone older in age who rarely even use computers... it is yet another reason to despise the awful Windows 8.

Saturday was a rather interesting day too. I went out and about, to the Altamonte Mall, as it had been some time since my last journey there. I walked around and as usual, went inside a few stores and browsed. This time I spent more time than expected inside a FYE. Yes, believe it or not FYE is still around. They actually had some pretty nice deals. Amongst the items I purchased was a box set of most of the early Godzilla films. Getting to see the Japanese originals of all of those movies... pretty sweet to me. Of course I am interested in the American Godzilla film coming out in May. From what I understand it'll be much better than that awful '98 Godzilla movie.

After that, I went up to Lake Mary. I figured that was the time to get dinner at a BurgerFi restaurant, and at a new location at that. I enjoyed eating their burger and fries, as typical. I did have their concrete shake and it was a fruit one at that; the menu never made it clear that it'd actually have pieces of the fruit in it, but even with that it was fine. I could have done without a few people who were there; not the employees, but the customers. There were some that were just off-putting and obnoxious all around.

Sunday, the only thing I did was go to McDonalds for dinner. I did have the legendary Shamrock Shakes; I know it has its haters but I think they're tasty.

I know this isn't the longest blog I have done. I also know that when I return a week from today, it'll be a more eventful and interesting blog, as I plan on doing several unique and unusual things for me, so that will give me plenty to write about.

Stalingrad, Burger King Drama & Roy's Fresh Lemonade

Here's what I've done since last Monday. On that day, after I posted my blog I went to get a tank of gas and at that gas station (a 7-11) I washed the car, as it was starting to get filthy and the next day, it was getting new tires so it might as well be cleaned. After that I went to Best Buy for a bit, where I did make some random purchases. The next day the only thing that happened was that new tires were purchased and put on, and there's been no problems with that. So, onto Wednesday where some excitement did happen.

I had free time so in the afternoon I went on over to the east side of Orlando, which is a place I only get to once in awhile most of the time. I decided to see a wacky film that somehow got an IMAX 3D release. I presume most people didn't know how in the week before the 300 sequel took over the IMAX screens, Sony released a Russian film about World War II and an important battle involving Russia and Germany where all the Russian (and German) dialogue is subtitled and I saw zero advertising for it. It did about as well at the box office as you'd expect with those circumstances, especially considering what's currently going on with Russia. What crappy timing for Sony.

Anyhow, the movie is called Stalingrad and while the story was melodramatic and cliché, it was fine and the action and effects were pretty good, so I enjoyed it overall. I was expecting to be the only person in there but there were a few others. After that I ate at Qdoba and purchased a few movies for cheap at the great place known as MovieStop before heading on back home.

Thursday, in the morning a first cousin visited. He lives on the other side of the country so seeing him is a rare occasion. He was in Florida for work-related reasons so he was able to stop by for a bit. It was nice to see him. After that, the day was dull, except for a stop by Burger King for lunch. I really need to stop going to the location in downtown Clermont. I had problems there before and it continued. They screwed up my order. They fixed it, but suddenly the sight I saw and heard when I walked in made more sense. A young trashy couple were yelling at the manager over something or another and I know they called Burger King Corporate or whatever you call to complain about one of their restaurants, and I know the girl dropped a loud F bomb as they walked away. I just presumed they were dumb white trash but turns out, they may have been justified in acting that way.

Friday I didn't do a thing so onto Saturday. On that day, I decided to return to Winter Park to go to Rocket Fizz again to pick up some more gourmet sodas. That's indeed what I did and they had a 2 for 1 deal on something known as Roy's Fresh Lemonade, from Lafayette, Louisiana and it has some random middle-aged dude on the label. Wacky. I had some the night before and it was good. After that I was going to eat at the neighboring BurgerFi restaurant but they literally had a line going out the door and even if I would have waited, there would have been no place for me to sit down and eat, so instead of walking around to try and find a local place to eat at (I did walk around for a bit later) that likely would have been crowded too, I went to the nearby Firehouse Subs, which at the time had no customers. Their food is fine so once in awhile I like to eat there.

I only mention it once in awhile, but it's true whenever I drive on the highways and byways of Florida: traffic always sucks! I had to deal with some particularly bad examples of that in the past week. Real idiocy, from driving way too fast to just being damn rude. It's a constant problem, believe me, even if I only mention it once in a blue moon. Speaking of vehicles, while driving around on Saturday I saw parked an Aston Martin convertible and a Lamborghini. Must be nice. I also saw on the highway a cherry red 60's Chevy Impala convertible, which looked pretty cool.

I did not do anything on Sunday so as I always say, when I return (a week from today), not a lot is on the agenda yet but I'll find things to do and talk about.

The WWE Network, Movie Marathons & Bicijorimoo Jizawuo

If you're wondering what a Bicijorimoo Jizawuo is, it is the Twitter name of a spam account that sent me a message. I did not click on the link and instead I reported the guy. I'll explain the other two things.

This past Monday, the only thing of note is that I paid to get the WWE Network, which launched that day. They will eventually have a huge array of programming on there but already you can watch basically all of the pay per views from WWE, WCW and ECW. That alone makes it worth the purchase price. They only offered it in a 6 month block but I paid 60 bucks and I am fine with that. Plus, they're showing all the current pay per views as they happen, including Wrestlemania in a month's time. That also makes it worth the price, despite me not caring much for the current WWE product and not having been a regular watcher of it for years now.

Tuesday, I had free time so I went to Walt Disney World. Heh heh heh. I went to the Magic Kingdom. I walked around for a bit, went on a few attractions (including ones I hadn't been on in a long while) and I had dinner there. As this day was the birthday of legendary pro wrestler Ric Flair, I rode Space Mountain; whoo! That was a popular phrase he said in promos back in the day.

Wednesday through Friday were rather dull; Thursday night I watched a live special on the WWE Network of their minor league wrestling federation, NXT. It's based out of Winter Park so it'd take me less than an hour to drive there and see a show. One of these days I should. The event they broadcasted was nice, with one great match and another really good one.

So, let me skip ahead to Saturday. That was a different day, for sure. For the past few years, AMC Theatres have presented the Best Picture nominees during two different weekends. I've wanted to try it before but whether it be their schedule or my schedule or other circumstances, it hasn't worked out until this year. It means that on this day I saw 5 movies in a span of 12 hours. They were Nebraska, Captain Phillips, Her, American Hustle and Gravity. Only Gravity had I seen before. It as a more popular event than I expected. At least 200 other people were jammed into one of the biggest auditoriums they have there. I could have done without the D-bag MC (i.e. random theatre employee who usually sweeps the aisles and refills the popcorn machine) who was so loud and loathsome whenever he got on the mic to speak that I ended up being out of the auditorium until he got out of there. Yeah, that bad.

They gave everyone lanyards so you could go out of the theatre during the intermissions they had between each movie, to walk around, take a smoke break, or whatever else. They had an hour long dinner break, which was good and during that I went across the path to Splitsville, where I had a burger and fries dinner. It was a fun time and the audience there were fine and gave no problems, thankfully. But wow was I stiff and sore from sitting in those seats for so long.

As for the movies I saw, I really enjoyed Nebraska and Captain Phillips, I thought Her was more odd than anything else (it was too quirky for its own good, but the individual elements were for the most part at least pretty good), American Hustle I did not even think was all that good (just about all of the characters were awful people and I didn't care about them. None of them were like Leo in Wolf of Wall Street or other films about reprehensible characters that you still enjoy watching in action) and Gravity is still awesome and it's my film of 2013.

When I got back, I discovered that my laptop woudn't start up Windows 7. I'll spare you the details but after over an hour I finally got it to work. It required a System Restore but at least it did the job. From what I understand, there may have a hard drive failure in my future; I am as thrilled about that as you'd expect. At least I have a portable terabyte hard drive and now everything from the hard drive is now updated on the portable hard drive in case it should die for good soon.

Sunday, I stayed in and the only thing I did was half pay attention to the Oscars. I had them on mute while I listened to and sometimes even watched other things. Most of the winners were expected but that it is alright. I don't take that awards show too seriously anyhow, so that's why I did not pay full attention to it.

I will return next Monday. I only have an idea or two as to what I'll be doing and it won't be anything like going to Walt Disney World or seeing 12 hour movie marathons. Still, I'll find things to talk about, as I always do.
