Star Wars, Seeing Clearly Now & LOL Justin Bieber

Here's what I've done since last Monday. It's been a quiet week but that's alright. The next blog I'll do will be more interesting. I'll be talking about watching the Super Bowl and there's also a UFC pay per view I'll go somewhere to see.

This past Monday, I got a message saying that my new glasses came in. I recently talked about how I had my eyes examined by a lady eye doctor known as Doctor Love. My prescription had to be “slightly sharpened” so I got new glasses. I picked them up and as always, it takes some time to get used to it but for the past few days I've now become used to it and yeah it is better than what I've had for a long time. Tuesday I did nothing so let me skip ahead to Wednesday.

Wednesday, me and someone I know went to a local restaurant chain that's local to the Central Florida area. It's known as Gator's Dockside and even though it was on the chilly side we still went out. I don't know about the other person but me I hadn't been to a Gator's Dockside in a few years. Back in the day I saw a handful of UFC pay per views at the place but that changed soon after the Buffalo Wild Wings opened. To me it's amazing the BWW has been around for a few years now. Anyhow, the food at Gator's was nice so I am not sure why we hadn't been there in so long. On the way back we noticed there was a chopper hovering over a location a few miles from where I live and there was a news van and fire truck screaming by. Turns out, an officer of the law had to shoot a deranged suspect pretty close to where I live.

Thursday, I decided to do something different. I drove down to a shopping center I hadn't been to before. It's in Davenport and it's south on US 27 (a road I don't like being on when I have to be on it south of where I live; I ALWAYS have traffic troubles when I am on it, always) just south of where it crosses another hellish road, Interstate 4. I drove down there and I went in a few stores. I bought some books from Books-A-Million, as that's me.

Before I get into which restaurant I drove to after the shopping plaza adventure, I have to mention that I found it hilarious how Justin Bieber got arrested (of course it had to be in Florida, too). Way back when I didn't really care about him one way or another, but when it was made clear in the past year what a horrible awful human being he was, I am glad it happened to him. However, with how he's living his life I have a feeling he's going to have a huge fall from grace and who knows how bad his life is going to end up. Oh, and I also found via “less than ethical means” a copy of the original theatrical cut of Star Wars. Yes, the film now known as Episode IV. I finally got to see it in widescreen rather than on VHS like I did when I was a kid. It's still awesome and I wish that version could get a Blu-Ray release rather than the lame alleged “improved” version with added scenes and other crap.

Anyhow, after I left that shopping plaza, I went to a Texas Roadhouse where I had a burger and fries and the food was pretty good.

Friday through Sunday wasn't exciting at all. I mean, there was a free UFC show on TV I mostly watched and one afternoon I dropped out clothing at Goodwill then picked up some printer ink. Other than that, dullsville. Like I said at least the next blog should be more interesting.

Thelonious Monk, Rod Stewart, John Travolta & Todd Rundgren

If you're wondering how I came up with that grouping of artists, on Spotify I discovered a CD put out by a UK label which contained seven songs from the legendary jazz artist Monk, one each from Rod, John and Todd, and there's also War's Low Rider and a 70's song from most famous in the 60's band Gerry & The Pacemakers. What a bizarre CD all around. The album is titled The Best of Setco Vol 51.

This past Monday, soon after I posted my last blog I went on a little journey. I decided to go to Lakeland, about an hour south from where I live. A brand new Cinemark Theatres opened up by the big mall in town just a few days earlier, and it was billed as “NextGen”, meaning all the screens are pretty nice and are matched with bitchin' sound systems, and the joint looks pretty nice overall. I enjoyed it and if only it was closer to home... by the way, if you heard about the shooting at the movie theatre in Wesley Chapel, that town outside of Tampa is only about 60 miles from where I live. I haven't been to that theatre before but I've heard of it. I hate how many people act in auditoriums, but shooting and killing someone for being a dumbass and texting during the previews... that is crossing the line.

The movie I saw was the newest Paranormal Activity film. The last one was pretty bad, and I had enjoyed all the ones before that. The new one is different and it was a breath of fresh air to the franchise. Before that I walked around the mall and it's pretty nice and unlike most enclosed malls these days, most of their lots are filled instead of vacant.

After that I went a little south and for only the second time I went to the rad fast food place known as PDQ. I talked about being there a few months ago when I was in South Tampa. The place is great and if one was closer to Clermont I'd be there often. It's mainly a chicken joint and their food is great. I had their chicken fingers & fries and as it was limited edition, a mint oreo shake. A great meal it was.

Tuesday was nothing happening and Wednesday... well, it wasn't a great day overall. I won't get into the details as it was nothing major; it was just some little things, like me being annoyed with people in general. I had to go to Walmart to get some items and the people there... they did not help improve my mood.

Thursday, I decided to try out my newly acquired debit card I got from my new bank. I went to one of their ATM's and I withdrew 10 bucks. It worked fine so that was good. On the way back I stopped by somewhere to get a treat. It was the Abracadabra Ice Cream Shop, a place I've talked about a few times before in the past. They make liquid nitrogen ice cream which may sound weird but it's actually pretty tasty. If only most of the other people in the shop on this chilly night weren't complete cretins! At least the peanut butter treat I had was real good. I just had to finish it at home.

Friday and Saturday I did not do anything; it was chilly out (especially on Saturday) so why go out, you know? I just stayed in and relaxed. Sunday was an interesting day for me. I actually went out, for one, and I returned to some spots I hadn't been to for a few months. I returned to Winter Park and first I stopped to get gas at a Wawa. Then, I went to get more soda from the wacky gourmet soda shop known as Rocket Fizz. That's indeed what I did. It was busy there so I did not shop for too long. I still got a decent amount. After that I returned to an Ale House, the mainly Florida chain of restaurants. It was a packed house; it was the pro football conference championships, so the winners of those two games would play in the Super Bowl in 13 days.

I found the last open spot at the bar, and it was right by some random woman... she looked to be slightly older than me and I must presume she is a fan of crowds, as she only drank water at the bar... and always on the countertop was a Portuguese Bible! No kidding. I did chat with that lady; no it wasn't one of those things and I won't reveal what was said, but I did not ask her why she was there. Yet another thing that I swear could only happen to me. That poor woman, by the way: the team she was rooting for got dominated and lost. That was the highlight of my day.

Today, I already did the one big event of the day: I picked up my new glasses. As always it'll take some time to get used to the new prescription but overall I dig them. I'll be back a week from today. I have nothing on the agenda... yet.

Evolve Wrestling, Polar Vortexes & Calling Dr. Love

Here's what I've done since last Monday. Last Monday night I sort of paid attention to the major college football championship, which was actually a competitive and interesting game. I still don't care too much for major college sports due to how dirty and corrupt and money-grubbing it is but the game was nice. Tuesday the only thing I did was go into town to pick up Papa John's Pizza. I did not feel like doing more given that the high temperature was only in the mid 40's. I'll blame it on the greatly named Polar Vortex. I say that and I know I shouldn't complain given the weather other people across the country had to experience, which was dangerously low temperatures.

Wednesday I had to do an adult thing. I mentioned recently how I am not a member of a certain bank anymore due to them closing their branch in town and the closest one takes like a 20 minute drive to get to. I looked at a few different banks still in town and there was one which offered the best deal for me. I won't list which bank it is; I've had identity theft issues way back in late '09 and early '10 and I won't take any chances there. Although, as the banker looked up my credit score it was good so that was a relief that those issues don't haunt me today.

Thursday, I did something I haven't done in way too long: get an eye exam. Believe it or not I hadn't had an eye exam since September of 2003 back when I went to school at Illinois State University and one afternoon I had an exam at the Lenscrafters in Normal, Illinois. It was long overdue so I finally had the exam at the Lenscrafters in Winter Garden. The whole process went fine... except for having my eyes dilated. I have real sensitive eyes so that was not a pleasant experience. It took longer than usual but I finally was able to get through it and it may be the last time I ever get them dilated.

After that, the prescription had to be “slightly sharpened” so I had to pick out new frames, and that was quite wacky. A guy who at least I know was metrosexual and I suspect was homosexual assisted me with that, and also there at the time was an older police officer, a pair of old lesbians, and a MILF. All of this is true. Oh, and the lady doctor who examined my eyes... her name was DOCTOR LOVE. This greatly amused me as I was reminded of the awesome KISS song Calling Dr. Love. In a week or so I'll get the new frames and prescription. It was sorely needed as the ones I have now are just old, dirty, and now starting to get scratched up.

Friday I did not do a darn thing so let me skip ahead to Saturday, where in some ways it was like a blast from the past. I realized that it's been a long while since I've last attended a pro wrestling show. I figured I should on this night. It was an event presented by a mainly Northeastern wrestling organization known as Evolve Wrestling and the show had quite a few people I rarely if ever see. When I got there, the parking lot was full and there was no obvious auxiliary parking; I decided to park in a paid lot downtown and I had to hike on over to the building. It's not like I didn't need the exercise so I won't complain.

It was nice to see some people I haven't chatted with in person in months. It was a nice crowd there too. As for the show, I understand how some would complain about how it's over the top in that many brutal and devastating moves are delivered and yet people kept not getting pinned despite being the victim of many brutal and devastating moves. I know some don't care for it and I wouldn't want to watch such things all the time, but once in awhile it's cool and everyone should appreciate how well the wrestlers do such moves and there are plenty of intricate sequences that were done and done well. It was a quality time and it was nice to go to a show, as back in the past I went to them often then various things happened and I fell out of the habit.

After that, as I was still downtown I figured I should return to Ghost Bar & Lounge. It was different this time. From what I understand, every Saturday night from now on it'll be all wacky and it will be like a real sanitized version of a rave; it's dark except for blacklights and they handed out light-up crap like glowsticks and the like, accompanied by blasting pulsating dance or rap music. For a few minutes there was even a tiny lady who did a routine with glowing hula hoops and it was rad. I don't have much to say about my actual time there otherwise, except that it was pretty busy there so it's a successful gimmick.

On the way back to the vehicle I walked by a Jimmy John's sub shop so I stopped there for a quick bite to eat. I was amused to see a really drunk dude almost literally be carried to a seat outside by his pals; several police officers saw this and I thought it was certain this wasted guy would get arrested for public drunkenness but his friends were able to convince the po-po that he was fine and they would take care of him... which they did. They got him a bottle of water. I shudder to think what would have happened to the bro if he did not have his buddies around.

Sunday I remained at home and did nothing except pay some attention to the pro football games. As almost always, I'll be back a week from today. I have some things in mind for what to do so it shouldn't be too dull of a blog.

Capital City Applenache, Peanut Butter Press-ley, & Ryan Dirteater

Here's a recap of what I've done since I last posted, which was the afternoon of New Years Eve. I did nothing the night of NYE, which is fine by me. Wednesday, I did not do much either... until the evening. I decided to go out to a local establishment to watch the local college football team (the University of Central Florida Knights) play in literally their biggest game ever, against the Baylor Bears in a game in the Phoenix area of Arizona. That local establishment happens to be the World of Beer in Clermont. When I first got there they just finished paying a game known as Brewery Bingo, which went about as you'd expect. I watched the game and I had the following:

Woodchuck Winter Cider
Stella Artois Cidre
Widmer Brothers Brrr, an amusingly named amber/red ale
Capital City Applenache, a unique doppelbock and it actually was good

The crowd there wasn't the largest but thankfully there was little in the way of idiocy there so I was able to relax and watch the game. I then discovered that World of Beer now closes at midnight on the weeknights instead of 1AM, like it said on their website. The game wasn't finished so I went on over to the nearby Buffalo Wild Wings to see the rest, and hardly anyone was there by the time I showed up. But hey, UCF actually won the game. That surprised many people, me included.

Thursday, my parents and I were invited up to my aunt's house; she lives in the giant retirement community known as The Villages. We had dinner up there and she likes to worry about people enjoying the food she makes, but it's always at least fine. It's usually unusual fare too, so that makes it interesting. It was a nice time up there.

Friday I did not do a thing, as for Florida it was cold. I know, not a lot of people will have sympathy given how bad and brutally cold the weather was in most of the country this past weekend and how the weather is today for many people across the country. I did not feel like going out when I don't even think the temperature reached 50 degrees. Being indoors is fine with me. So, onto Saturday; that was more interesting. I went to Winter Garden Village (the outdoor mall) for the first time in a few weeks. It was warmer out, thankfully. I walked around and went to Planet Smoothie as they have some new limited edition flavors. I had the Peanut Butter Press-ley; it was peanut butter, banana, cocoa, and some other things. It was pretty good.

Sunday, I had free time so it meant I was able to Downtown Disney and for the first time in at least a few months, I went to the fancy giant bowling alley known as Splitsville. I went there to have dinner and I also watched the NFL playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers. It was in Green Bay and it was extremely cold. It was like 4 degrees with a windchill of 12 below zero. I used to live in Illinois and I do remember dealing with temperatures like that... and colder. Right now in my old hometown of Belvidere, Illinois it is 13 below zero with a windchill of 35 below zero; I feel bad for all the people in the Midwest. Anyhow, the 49ers won the game which made me happy but they did some real stupid things and almost blew it.

The food I had there was pretty good and I listened to the random songs they played, both old and new. I was happy to have the SoundHound app on my iPod Touch as it made me able to ID most of the modern songs I heard, as I don't listen to Top 40 and haven't for a long time and if it wasn't for a magical app that can tell you what song is playing just from hearing a few seconds of it... I usually couldn't tell you who was the artist, let alone the song title. Anyway, late last night I was home and I was channel surfing and I came across bullriding on one of the channels. I discovered that there was a bullrider named Ryan Dirteater, which seems like the most perfect bullrider name you can possibly have. There used to be one named B.J. Kramps and that'll always make me laugh but it's hilarious due to vulgar reasons.

I'll be back a week from today now that I am back on schedule. There isn't much planned... yet. However I do have some interesting ideas for things to do.
